How to brief a software agency (and actually get what you want)

· Logical Solutions Newsletter 4 min read

The most expensive thing in a software project isn't development time — it's misalignment. We've seen projects go sideways not because of technical failures, but because the client and the team were solving slightly different problems and didn't realize it until week six. A strong brief prevents this. Before your first call with any agency, you should be able to clearly answer: What problem does this solve? Who is the primary user? What does success look like in 90 days? What have you already tried?

You don't need to know the technical solution — that's what you're hiring for. But you do need to know your goal, your user, and your constraints (budget, timeline, existing systems). The agencies that do their best work are the ones with clients who come prepared. A clear brief isn't just helpful for the team — it's a forcing function that makes you think through the product more carefully than you would otherwise. Do that work upfront, and everything that follows gets easier.
